The existing side-by-side duplex was converted into a single-family home on a very tight budget. The main strategy for the conversion was the separation of the public spaces from the more private, and the blurring of the interior and exterior spaces. The ceiling of the loft-like main living area unites the dining, kitchen, and living areas and continues over an outdoor area which steps down to the backyard, which is a utilitarian take on a modernist Zen garden containing the revamped studio. An eclectic mix of styles and textures enliven and warm the simple modern spaces.
