The owners of this hillside traditional house in Silverlake wanted to modernize their house while preserving its cottage charm. The juxtaposition of old and the new elements in the house is bridged by use of materials, natural light, and views which blend the two together. The main thrust of the project was the creation of a new kitchen and dining room over the existing master bedroom. The new room commands panoramic views over the reservoir below and the San Gabriel Mountains in the distance, while connecting visually with the pool deck and patio below. The sloped roof opens to the view and allows light to pour into the room. The sloped roofline extends into the existing gabled living room, raising the roof to allow in light and space.
